Corrections and appeals

Anyone can request that an issued source-verification record be revoked. You do not have to be a party to the article. Requests are handled within 5 working days, and the outcome is recorded on the record itself.

What can be disputed

This channel handles the accuracy of the verification record. The badge does not rule on whether the article's content is true, so a claim that "the article is factually wrong" belongs with the newsroom and the issuing organisation, not here.

  • This article did not come from the organisation shown
  • The article text differs from the source document
  • The issuing organisation has withdrawn the release
  • A fact-checking organisation has published a debunk of this content
  • The article was edited after it was verified

How a request is handled

  1. 1. Received — You get a reference number immediately. Leave an email and we will send you the outcome.
  2. 2. Compared — We compare the retained source, the receipt record and the body fingerprint. Where the answer is not clear-cut, we ask the issuing organisation to confirm.
  3. 3. Decided — One of three outcomes.
    • Revoked — The record states the revocation and its reason. The record page is not deleted. The badge disappears from the publisher's page at the next deployment.
    • Corrected — If part of the record is wrong, that item is fixed and the correction is noted.
    • Declined — We reply with the reason.
  4. 4. Published — Revocation and correction counts are published per outlet on the publisher profiles. There is no structure in which they can be hidden. Participating publishers

When we are wrong

Records are issued automatically, and automated judgements can be wrong. Early on, the cross-check logic linked an unrelated fact-check to an article; we fixed the rule and reissued. If you find an error, tell us — errors we find ourselves are recorded the same way as the ones reported here.

FAQ

Who can request that a record be revoked?
Anyone. You do not have to be a party to the article, the newsroom, or the issuing organisation. Requests are handled within five working days and the outcome is recorded on the record itself.
What cannot be disputed here?
Whether the article's content is true. The badge attests provenance and integrity, not the truth of the announcement, so a claim that the reporting is factually wrong belongs with the newsroom and the issuing organisation.
What happens to a record after it is revoked?
It stays online and is marked as revoked, with the reason. Records are never deleted. Revocation counts are published per outlet, so they cannot be hidden.
