When people picture manipulated media, they think of AI: a synthetic face, a cloned voice. But researchers who track this for a living keep pointing at something far more ordinary. Poynter's MediaWise team and the Mozilla Foundation both describe the same pattern — the bulk of viral misinformation isn't generated at all. It's genuine media, lightly bent out of shape. A real image with a fake story bolted on. That's a cheapfake, and it's cheap because it takes seconds to make and no special tools.

The five shapes a cheapfake takes
Almost every cheapfake is a variation on one of these. Learn the shapes and you'll start noticing them before the caption even loads.
Miscaptioning
The most common form. A genuine, unedited photo or clip is paired with a caption that describes a different event, place, or date. Nothing about the pixels is fake — the lie lives entirely in the words wrapped around them. A real flood photo from one country gets recaptioned as another; a years-old protest becomes 'today'.
Old media, new date
A picture that's genuinely real, just recycled. Disaster, war, and election coverage attract this constantly: an image from 2018 resurfaces during a 2026 event because it looks close enough. It isn't fabricated, but presenting it as current is still misleading.
Selective cropping
Cropping decides what you don't see. A rally photo cut tight around a thin section of the crowd suggests a poor turnout; the full frame might show a packed square. Same file, opposite impression — no editing software required beyond the crop handles.
Speed manipulation
Slowing a video down can make a person sound slurred or unsteady; speeding it up can make them seem frantic. This is a classic cheapfake because it needs nothing more than a playback setting, yet it changes how a viewer reads someone's state of mind.
Splicing and selective editing
Two real clips joined so a question appears to follow a different answer, or a sentence cut before its qualifier. Each fragment is authentic. The sequence is the fabrication — which is why a transcript or the full uncut source usually settles it.
A six-check routine that works
Find the earliest version, not the loudest one
Drag the image into Google Lens, TinEye, or Yandex and sort for the oldest match you can find. Separate the picture from its caption
Ask two questions independently: is the media real, and is the claim about it real? Cheapfakes survive precisely because people conflate the two. A photo can pass every authenticity test and still be attached to a completely false story. Verify the who/what/where/when of the caption on its own terms.
Look for the edge of the frame
If a crop feels persuasive — a tiny crowd, an isolated gesture, a lone sign — go looking for the wider shot. News agencies and eyewitnesses often post the full scene. What sits just outside the crop is frequently the part that changes the meaning.
Check the clock: is the clip sped up or slowed down?
If a video is being shared mainly to show how someone sounds or moves, find the original upload and compare the runtime and pitch. A voice that drops lower and drags is a tell-tale sign of a slowed clip. The unedited version, usually on the speaker's own channel or a wire service, is the reference point.
Read the whole thing before you trust the excerpt
For quotes and interview clips, track down the full transcript or uncut recording. Splicing works by hiding the sentence that came next. If an outlet only ever shows a five-second fragment and never links the source, treat the fragment as an argument, not evidence.
Read laterally about the account sharing it
Leave the post and search what others say about the account and the claim. Cheapfake or deepfake — why the difference matters
It's tempting to run every suspicious clip through an AI detector, but that's the wrong first instinct for most of what circulates. A deepfake is fabricated by a model; a cheapfake is a real recording someone reframed. Point an AI-image detector at a genuine photo that's simply been miscaptioned and it will — correctly — tell you the photo is real, which tells you nothing about the lie.
